Ways to Enjoy the Sun Safely

Sunburn is a type of skin damage caused by the sun. Sunburn is also a sign that the skin responds to potentially damaging UV radiation by producing additional pigmentation that provides it with some but not enough sun protection. Spending long time in the sun will increase the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. People of all skin colors are at risk of this type of damage. However, you can reduce this risk through some basic ways.

Firstly, limit your time in the sun, especially between 10 am and 2 pm when the sunlight is so intense. Try to get your children stay in the shade during this period of time.

Secondly, no sunscreen can completely block UV radiation, other protective measures such as protective clothing, sunglasses and sun hats can provide you more protection. Wear sun-protective clothing to protect the skin from sun exposure, such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, as well as sun hats. Actually, any clothing has an effect of sun protection. But clothes with a UPF rating would be better for protecting you from the sun and its rays. Generally, clothing with a UPF rating of 30+ will provide you with good protection. To get maximum protection, you can choose clothes that have UPF rating. Except clothes, a sun hat can protect your head and neck from the sun and its harmful UV rays. A bucket hat features with a wide brim that will give you shade during the hot summer.

Thirdly, use broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF rating of 15 or higher, even on cloudy days. A broad-spectrum sunscreen prevents both UVA and UVB rays, which are two types of solar ultraviolet radiation. Be sure to read the label to ensure proper use of sunscreen and consult a health care professional before applying sunscreen to infants under 6 months. Apply sunscreen to all uncovered skin, especially the nose, ears, neck, hands, feet and lips. Reapply at least every two hours. If you are swimming or sweating, use it more frequently. If you don’t have much hair, apply sunscreen or wear a hat to protect your head.

Although UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn, both UVA and UVB rays cause skin cancer. All sunscreens are resistant to the sun’s UVB rays, but only a broad spectrum of sunscreens provide adequate UVA protection to reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. Sunscreens that are not broad-spectrum and have an SPF of less than 15 do not give you the best protection and prevent more UV radiation. You will be at the risk of sunburn, skin cancer or early skin aging. It is better to choose waterproof sunscreen which can last 40 to 80 minutes, because you may spend a long period of time in the sun and get sweat, so you should choose a waterproof sunscreen that will provide you with good protection. If you do not reapply, the product may not be recognized as a “sunscreen” or will not offer you shade from the sun.
